Sea Island

Area Info

In 1926 automobile tycoon Howard E. Coffin (of the Hudson Motor Company) purchased an undeveloped barrier island north of St. Simons Island which became known as Sea Island. Mr. Coffin aspired to develop an “exclusive resort area which would represent the hospitality of the plantation era and the gracious living of yesteryear”. With the help of his first cousin Alfred W. Jones, Sr., The Cloister Hotel opened in 1928. The same year that Bill Jones began serving as President of the Sea Island Company. Today the family tradition continues with Alfred W. Jones (Bill) III at the helm. Guests of The Cloister Hotel have an extraordinary array of amenities to enjoy from the five miles of private beach, the world-class spa, to the stunning golf courses and so much more.

In June 2004, U.S. President George W. Bush was joined by other world leaders from France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada for the G-8 Summit.
